about
Nomadic indie rock project Paper Anthem releases third single ‘Zero,’ from upcoming sophomore album entitled To All the Sailors We’ve Lost (out 14 June on Sophrosyne Sounds). Following the overwhelming, drowning 'Aquatic' and the urgent time-travel epic '21st Season', singer-songwriter Joseph Hitchcock introduces an imagistic, mysterious, mesmerizingly poetic track with 'Zero.'
"I've never been in one, but I have a strong fear of terrorist attacks and disasters," Hitchcock explains. "The idea that it could happen to anybody—randomly—really freaks me out. This song is about going to work on the wrong day and the experience of passing into the afterlife."
Recorded along with ‘Aquatic’ and '21st Season' at Donut Time Audio—the home studio of Bay Area art rockers Everyone Is Dirty, who lend their producer/guitarist Christopher Daddio’s many talents to the impassioned track—and mixed by Kristofer Harris (Belle and Sebastian, Clock Opera), ‘Zero’ contrasts its almost eerie verses—merging lyrics of being 'still' and 'weary' with an unsettling reversed-vocal effect reminiscent of The Toadies' 'Possum Kingdom'—with a massive, soaring chorus that takes you away from all of it.
lyrics
I've seen it all
One step ago
Out of the window
And into the streets
I've seen it fall
Nothing at all
Tree skins and circuitry
Fall to us all from the gods
I'm glad I came all this way with you
And followed the blood you paint with your shoes
Here we are now on the outskirts of town
Gates outstretched and open but only for you
Only for you
Nice to meet you
Silent and still
Let's drink 'til our souls are weary and worn
I believed you
A hero today
Just take my hand
If you can find mine in this mess
I'm glad I came all this way with you
And followed the blood you paint with your shoes
Here we are now on the outskirts of town
Gates outstretched and open but only for you
Only for you
